The extraordinary complexity of your skin

Your skin is a living, breathing organ with its own intelligence

We tend to think of skin as just “the outside” – but it’s so much more than that. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and one of its most complex. It’s alive, responsive, and constantly working to protect you – from environmental damage, infection, dehydration, and even emotional stress.

Understanding the layers, structure, and sensitivity of your skin helps you choose skincare that respects its natural function – rather than working against it.

Three layers, one living system

Your skin is made up of three main layers – each with its own unique function:

• Epidermis – the top layer you can see and touch. It contains skin cells, pigment, and your moisture barrier. Constantly renewing, it sheds dead skin cells and regenerates every 28–40 days.

• Dermis – the middle layer, rich in collagen and elastin fibres. This is where your skin gets its strength, elasticity, and hydration. It also houses blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, and immune cells.

• Hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue) – the deepest layer, made mostly of fat. It helps cushion organs, insulate the body, and support the upper layers of skin.

Though these layers are distinct, they work in harmony – and what happens below the surface often determines how your skin looks and feels on the outside.

Skin is an intelligent organ

Your skin isn’t just a passive barrier. It’s an active, sensory interface between you and the world. It helps regulate body temperature, communicates with your immune system, and responds to touch, light, and stress. It even has its own microbiome – a community of beneficial bacteria that helps defend against harmful microbes and inflammation.

Skin is unique – and constantly changing

No two people have the same skin – and even your own skin changes from season to season, and year to year.

• Skin types can range from dry to oily to combination, and are influenced by both genetics and environment.

• Skin tone varies in melanin content, which affects how it responds to sunlight and pigmentation.

• Skin thickness differs across the body – it’s thinnest on your eyelids, thickest on your palms and soles.

• Sensitivity levels vary widely, too – from robust and resilient to highly reactive and easily inflamed.

These factors all impact how your skin reacts to products, climate, stress, and ageing – which is why there’s no one-size-fits-all skincare – and why it’s so important to patch test any new products.

Respecting skin complexity through natural science

At Antipodes, we formulate with deep respect for the intelligence and complexity of the skin. That’s why we use high-tech natural actives and gentle, skin-compatible ingredients that work in harmony with your skin’s structure, sensitivity, and ever-changing needs.

Whether you’re supporting a weakened barrier, calming inflammation, or hydrating from within, our skincare is designed to support what your skin already knows how to do – just with a little help from nature.

Skin and ageing: what changes over time

As we age, our skin naturally becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic. Collagen and elastin – the proteins that give skin its structure – decline. Cell turnover slows. The barrier becomes weaker and more prone to damage. Hydration decreases, making skin look dull or lined.

But ageing isn’t just inevitable – it’s intelligent. Your skin changes as you do. And with the right support – through hydration, barrier protection, collagen-boosting actives, and microbiome balance – you can help your skin age healthily and gracefully.

Your skin is part of nature – that’s why we believe in natural skincare

Your skin isn’t separate from the natural world — it is nature. It grows, adapts, breathes, responds, and heals. Just like the ecosystems around us, your skin thrives when it’s in balance. That’s why we believe in skincare that’s grounded in the natural world — made with pure, bioactive botanicals that work in harmony with your skin’s biology, not against it. Nature understands skin, because skin is nature.

Fascinating facts about skin

• Your skin is your body’s largest organ – covering about 2 square metres!

• It renews itself every 28 to 40 days – meaning your body is constantly creating new skin cells to keep you protected.

• You shed around 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute. That’s more than a million cells every hour – mostly without you noticing.

• Skin has its own immune system. Specialised cells in the skin help fight off bacteria, allergens, and other threats before they enter the body.

• Your skin is home to trillions of microorganisms – bacteria, fungi, and even viruses – all part of your skin’s microbiome, which helps protect and balance your skin.

• The thickness of your skin varies all over your body. It’s thinnest on your eyelids (about 0.05 mm) and thickest on your palms and soles (up to 1.5 mm).

• Collagen makes up about 75% of your skin’s dry weight. It’s the protein that gives your skin strength and elasticity – but we naturally lose about 1% per year after our mid-20s.

• Sebum (your skin’s natural oil) is actually a mix of lipids, waxes, and fatty acids – and it plays a crucial role in keeping your skin soft and waterproof.

• Skin can “talk” to your brain. It contains thousands of nerve endings that detect pressure, temperature, and pain – which is why it’s so responsive to touch.
